Really, this is an article about turning the way you already think into a repeatable AI workflow, without making your brain wear a name badge and attend a webinar.

An AI Skill is not a mystical developer object in a black turtleneck. It is just a saved way of doing a recurring job: the instructions, context, preferences, examples, and review points that teach AI how you want the work handled next time.

That is the part worth caring about. A good AI session should not die politely when the chat ends. If you figured out a better way to brief a writer, review a lead, turn field notes into an article, or prep a client handoff, a skill is how you bottle that little win so you do not have to re-explain the whole ritual again next Tuesday.

Which brings me to Wilson.

I have spent enough years trying to organize my own thinking to know one slightly humiliating fact: some of my best product language shows up when I am not at a desk.

Not because desks are evil. Calm down.

But because walking changes the quality of the thought, especially in a place that gives your brain something to bounce off of. Wilson did that for me.

It is completely valid to open ChatGPT and say, "Here is everything in my head. Help me turn this into a reusable skill."

That is not cheating. That is often the most honest way to work, especially if your thought is coming from a walk, a client call, a pile of notes, ten photos, and one very strong feeling that there is a system hiding under all of it.

But you do need to tell the AI the goal.

The goal is what lets the AI separate useful process from incidental noise. If I say, "I walked around Wilson and saw public art, a train station, downtown redevelopment, and a red table," that is material. If I say, "I need a skill that turns field observations into publishable local-authority content without losing my voice," now the AI knows what to build toward.

Without the goal, everything looks equally important. With the goal, the AI can start sorting.

How I would brain-dump into a skill

If I were turning this Wilson walk into a skill, I would not start by pretending to be formal. I would talk it out first.

I would give ChatGPT the raw material, but I would frame it with a few plain-English anchors:

The goal: turn real field observations into a polished Third Place Nomads article while preserving Jimmy's conversational voice.
The desired output: a publishable field note with a clear angle, useful local context, source notes, and a story arc that does not sound like generic travel content.
The constraints and preferences: keep the tone observant, useful, slightly funny, and human; do not overdo the tech pitch; do not flatten local weirdness.
Examples of good results: prior posts that kept a lived scene, a practical business lesson, and a little bit of voice in the same room.
Human review points: claims about a town, source links, final voice, client-sensitive details, and anything that might turn a lived observation into an overconfident conclusion.

If you want a simple starter prompt, use this:

Turn this brain dump into an AI Skill.

My goal is: [say what recurring job I want this skill to help me do]

The output I want is: [describe what a good finished result should look like]

Here is my messy process: [paste or dictate everything I know, including steps, preferences, examples, and weird little details]

Please turn this into a reusable skill that includes the goal, needed context, repeatable steps, style/preferences, examples of good results, and anything that should require human review before final output.

The brackets are not sacred. They are just there so your brain has somewhere to put the laundry.

That is enough to start. You can always refine the skill after using it once.

Honestly, that is the whole point. A skill should get better because the work taught you something.

That brings me to the part where the walk stops being only a walk and starts becoming a system.
